David French

Chair of Trustees

David has considerable and varied senior executive and non-executive experience. He has led and transformed a range of public benefit organisations including the Commonwealth Institute, the Westminster Foundation for Democracy and Relate.

Adwoa Darko


Adwoa studied Law at School of Oriental and African studies, and was active in the Students’ Union during her time there, becoming co-president of events and activities.  Following her graduation in 2016 and after her term as co-president, she joined the school as a full-time employee.

Ben is founding Partner of Minerva, the leadership services and executive search firm. He has around twenty years’ experience working with clients in the cultural, educational and third sectors.

Brian Murtagh


Brian Murtagh is YMCA Ireland Development Officer for the Greater Dublin area where he manages Family Support Programmes and Mentoring programmes across Dublin.

Grace Conacher


Grace Conacher spent the majority of her working career with the British Council, working in many different capacities in the UK and overseas.

James Holian


James joined RBS in 2008 to lead the strategic re positioning of the Global Banking & Markets business in response to the financial crisis. Since this time, James has held a number of different senior management and corporate client-facing roles across the bank. James is also the Chair of the YCI Finance Committee.

Kerry Reilly


Kerry was appointed Chief Executive of YMCA Scotland in January 2015. She has worked locally, nationally and internationally in the YMCA movement for over 22 years. She also worked for the International Development Education Association Scotland (IDEAS) between 2006-2007.

Mel Zuydam


Mel is an experienced international finance leader and has worked as CFO of an international program delivery organisation as well as a non-executive director of a major aid agency.

Michaela Kelly


Michaela joined the Board in 2015. She is currently a member of our International Programmes Committee. In her professional life, she is currently Project Director, Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust at Sightsavers and was previously Head of Programmes Delivery Unit at Plan UK.

Peter Liu


Peter is the Asia Pacific Chief Financial Officer at KKR. He has held various senior positions within the financial services sector for over 23 years covering the UK, Asia, USA and Europe.

Dr Sally Hartley


Sally has worked in international development predominantly in the NGO sector for ten years in the area of youth empowerment in both southern and East Africa and also in Asia. Sally established Restless Development’s programme in Zambia and spent four years working there as Country Director, and she has also worked for short periods in India, Nepal, South Africa, Tanzania and Uganda and in the UK in the area of fundraising and marketing.

Tim is currently on the board of trustees YMCA North London after many years working with Housing Associations such as Stonham, and Christian registered social landlords (RSLs) such as St Christopher’s Fellowship, Chapter 1 and most recently as CEO of Livability Housing. Tim is also YCI’s Safeguarding Lead.

In my role with Y Care International I coordinate projects in Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, I also provide support to the local partners ensuring the effective and efficient implementation of projects.

I manage a portfolio of Y Care International projects implemented with our partners in the global South, primarily in Liberia and Sierra Leone and lead the coordination of our emergency response activities in line with international humanitarian standards.

I lead on the capturing and communication of programme impact and evaluation, whilst also providing specialist advice to Y Care International and its partners.

I support Y Care International and partner organisations to strengthen the design, delivery and impact of our enterprise and employability programmes. This builds the capacity of our partners, develops our learning for best practice and enables as many vulnerable young women and men to gain access to decent jobs.

My role is to support the work of Y Care International’s Programmes team in the effective financial management of our international programmes and also to build the financial management capacity of our local partners.

Africa-Caribbean Programme Manager

I manage the Africa-Caribbean team, supporting team members and partners to design, implement, monitor and evaluate programmes for vulnerable young people in western and southern Africa, and in Haiti.

I lead on all things communications, both on and offline. As part of my role with Y Care International I strategically take forward and align our communication channels and key messages with new and existing audiences globally.

I am responsible for developing new strategic relationships with corporate partners, charitable trusts and foundations, YMCAs and high net worth individuals.

I am the person behind Y Care International’s communication channels with a focus on digital and social media. The communications team lets our donors, partners, networks and new audiences know about all the great work that we do around the world.

I am responsible for updating the fundraising database with regular donations and responding to enquiries or correspondence received from supporters. I am also responsible for managing Y Care International’s community fundraising programme, which includes challenge events and church groups.

I am responsible for all of our individual supporters, who give to us on a regular basis or via our cash appeals. I also manage any legacy or in-memory gifts that are left to Y Care International.

I am responsible for managing the Fundraising Department’s database. I support the fundraising department with income and campaign reporting and provide training and support for all users of the database.

I co-ordinate applications to Trusts and Foundations to complement our work funded by institutions, as well as bespoke projects.

As the Financial Controller, I’m responsible for maintaining oversight of financial management administration procedures and guidelines; advising our Senior Management Team and supporting colleagues; ensuring compliance and controls; providing financial analysis and reporting our accounts.

I am the Private Secretary for the Director of the Wellcome Trust and specifically work to improve communications and strategy across the organisation and externally. My interest in helping Y Care International originates from going to Bangladesh with them on the ICS programme.

I applied to join the Youth Engagement Panel this year in order to gain a better understanding of how an International NGO works, and how young people such as myself can work with them in order to create positive change within their communities.

In 2017 I volunteered with Y Care International on the International Citizen Service programme. This allowed me to experience the beautiful country of Sierra Leone, meet so many incredible people, as well as learn about development and the YMCA movement.

I am also a vet student and in the future I hope to become more involved with charity work both inside and outside of my profession.
