“Young people should lead from the front” – Natalie wins the young leader award!

The excitement was in the air on Friday 2nd November when YMCAs across England and Wales come together for the ninth annual Youth Matters Awards, a dazzling evening of celebration at 8 Northumberland Avenue.

This year’s glittering ceremony, hosted by former T4 presenter Miquita Oliver, celebrated the achievements of young people, staff, volunteers and YMCA projects, highlighting the work YMCA does each and every day to help young people reach their full potential.

Natalie Cheung represented Y Care International at the awards and won the Young Leader category. She shares her reflections from the evening;

It is such an honor to be recognised for my volunteer work with Y Care International. There was stiff competition from other worthy leaders who collectively show the power that young people have on their community.

It was an inspiration to learn about how YMCA’s in England and Wales are tackling difficulties like mental health and homelessness. I look forward to supporting the global YMCA community, particularly as we approach the landmark 175th anniversary of the YMCA in 2019. With or without this award, I am so grateful for what I have learnt through volunteering with Y Care International and the YMCA. I could not have expected the obstacles I faced while a Team Leader in Togo but the experience taught me that I am more capable and resilient than I ever thought.

Thank you for this perspective which I will take forward in my passion to generate career and education opportunities for young women in engineering, construction and technology. I really encourage young people to take the initiative and support the causes they care about by leading from the front.”
