Grant gives helping hand to Y Care International’s work in Honduras

19 June 2002

Y Care International has received over £175,000 from the Department for International Development (DFID) to help young people in Honduras develop the skills and motivation to take a full part in democratic processes.

In a country where nearly three quarters of the population is under 30, only a few complete secondary education or have the chance to develop skills to earn an independent living. Young people do not have a voice in government or policy making.

The YMCA of Honduras has already helped establish a National Youth Forum, involving 2,000 young people, and helped to form a national youth policy.

Now the DFID grant will allow it to educate and motivate young people, giving them the skills to play a full part in their country’s democratic processes, and help strengthen local communities.

Sarah Walker, Y Care International’s Programme Co-ordinator for Latin America, said: “The project will enable disadvantaged young people to influence and take part in local and national policy making, and develop local projects to improve life in their communities.”
