Global life skills
3 February 2010
In 2006, we embarked on a three year project with Kingston and Wimbledon YMCA. The aim of the project, funded by DFID, was to develop a global life skills course for young people who are residents at the YMCA hostel.
Most of the young people were homeless or from marginalised backgrounds and wanted to develop the skills they need to live independently and find employment. The project helped the YMCA to integrate global issues into its day to day youth work. The Global Life Skills course was run successfully over three years at both the Surbiton and Wimbledon hostels of Kingston and Wimbledon YMCA.
At the end of the course, a Global Life Skills Resource Pack was written so youth workers around the UK and Ireland can now deliver the course in their YMCAs. The course focuses on five themes and the pack is accompanied by a cd with powerpoints for each session on: housing, budgeting, careers advice and preparation for employment, healthy living and cooking.
