The Laos People's Democratic Republic is one of the few remaining communist states. Land-locked with a population of 5.8 million, subsistence agriculture accounts for half the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and provides 80% of total employment. Laos' infrastructure remains extremely basic and it is ranked amongst the poorest countries in the world in economic terms.

Although there is no direct YMCA presence in Laos, Y Care International has been supporting work in Laos since 2000, by working in partnership with the YMCA for Northern Development Foundation in Thailand. We have been supporting an agricultural development project in three regions of Laos.
