Sudan

In 2005, Sudan emerged from a 21-year civil war between the Khartoum-based islamist government and the mainly Christian based Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), based in the south of the country. The war, which was the continents’ longest running, led to the deaths of over 1.5 million people.

While the Government and the SPLM inched closer to peace, fighting broke out in the western region of Darfur in early 2003. The conflict in Darfur has claimed over 200,000 lives and left more than two million people displaced. We supported our partner, ACT International, to provide emergency assistance in Darfur.

We have been working in Yambio, southern Sudan, since early 2007, through the YMCA of Yambio. In 2009, after conflict broke out in the region once again, we supported the YMCA to provide emergency relief to refugees who flooded into Yambio.
