South Africa’s progressive constitution and successful national elections since the end of apartheid confirm that democracy is taking hold, allowing all people at least some say in their country’s future.
However, the country faces major problems including the cost of years of racial discrimination and oppression, high unemployment levels and a fifth of the population living with HIV/AIDS.
The YMCA has been present in South Africa since 1865. Y Care International has been working in South Africa since 1988, and we work in partnership both with the National Council of YMCAs and directly with the YMCA's regional offices in KwaZulu Natal and the Western Cape.
