Liberia
The civil war in Liberia, which ended in 2003, lasted 14 years. It claimed the lives of over 200,000 people and destroyed the economy and most of the country’s infrastructure.
The instability, forced conscription, use of child soldiers and gender based violence that destroyed lives during the war continue to be a challenge for reconciliation, rehabilitation and democracy. 85% of the population is believed to be unemployed or underemployed.
The YMCA has been present in Liberia since 1881, making it one of the oldest YMCAs in Africa. Y Care International has been working in Liberia since 2001, and we work in partnership with the National Council of YMCAs of Liberia.
