Global Youth Work at the Emirates

5 June 2010

On 4 June 2010, Y Care International ran the first of four annual global youth work ‘roadshows’ funded by a new three-year grant from the Department for International Development.

The roadshow brought 30 young people and youth workers from across the UK and Ireland to Arsenal's Emirates Stadium to exlore how football can be linked to global issues such as HIV and AIDS, Fairtrade and education.

With the World Cup on the horizon, there were workshops on South Africa and the environmental impact of travelling to and around the country, as well as the effect that building new stadiums has had on local communities. Finally, the event looked at the on-going concerns of racism within football and encouraged the group to think of strategies to combat such behaviour.

The day was topped off with a tour of the Emirates stadium which rewarded a fantastic day of learning for all.
