Pick up the Pace
1 December 2009
Y Care International is a member of the Jubilee Debt Campaign (JDC), a coalition of local/regional groups and national organisations which are calling for an end to the scandal of third world debt. The world's most impoverished countries are forced to pay over $100 million a day to the rich world in debt repayments, while poverty kills millions of their people. The campaign is calling for the cancellation of 100% of the unpayable debt of poor countries and aims to influence UK government policy on debt.
Pick up the pace campaign
Ten years ago, world leaders promised to tackle the debt crisis. Yet, only 20% of unpayable poor country debt has been dropped so far. More than $400 billion of debt must still be cancelled for the governments of the world to be able to meet their people's basic needs. For example, many poor countries are still paying more in debts than they spend on health or education.
Debt relief is coming too slowly, and is too limited for millions of people living in poverty. The ‘Pick up the Pace' campaign is calling on the UK government to speed up the rate of debt cancellation.
