Seed funding update
15 December 2009
Y Care International's ‘seed funding’ programme continues to give opportunities for local YMCAs to do global youth work with young people across the UK and Ireland.
One of the seed funding projects has brought young people from Northern Ireland and Scotland together to discuss how the issues in their communities connect with the realities facing their peers in developing countries.
The ‘Divisions' project has brought together two groups of young people from Lisburn and Edinburgh for a residential focusing on the divisions and barriers young people often experience in their communities. In both communities, issues around gang violence and territorialism are common, leading young people towards problematic relationships with the wider community and the authorities. Through linking these issues to similar experiences among young people in Honduras and Sierra Leone, the project has given the young people the chance to learn about the commonalities they share with their peers in other countries and gain an appreciation of wider issues, such as justice, fairness and citizenship.
