On 6 November 2008, young people involved in Richmond YMCA’s Youth Justice in Action campaign in northern England met with their local Member of Parliament (MP) William Hague, to discuss the campaign.
Mr Hague, a British Conservative politician, is also Shadow Foreign Secretary. He answered questions put to him by the young campaigners on various topics, including young people’s rights, making justice systems fairer for young people, and investments in good quality youth work.
YMCA Youth Worker Jenny Stabler said: “Meeting our local MP was a fundamental part of this project. The only people who can change the world are the people that want to, and these young people have stood up to make a difference for something they believe in.”
William Hague was also invited by young volunteer Jennie Richards to sign a postcard in support of the campaign. Jennie said: “We showed Mr Hague around and he was very interested in what we had to say. We are now looking forward to meeting him at Parliament next year - if he is lucky we might even bring him a chocolate biscuit!”
