Liberia emergency response

8 August 2003

Y Care International supported relief work in Liberia as the humanitarian crisis in the West African country worsened.

When rebel troops and government forces clashed on the streets of the Liberian capital Monrovia in 2003, an estimated one million people were displaced.

We were able to support the work of our partner, the Liberian YMCA, which continued to support local communities despite suffering constant looting during the conflict and often being caught in the crossfire.

The YMCA distributed emergency food for displaced communities, particularly orphans, who had no access to food. It provided shelter, nutrition and counselling for over 3,000 people.

We also supported the Liberian YMCA's long-term work to help rehabilitate marginalised and war-traumatised young people so they can rebuild their lives in the wake of war.
