Afghanistan earthquake, 2002
1 December 2002
In December 2002 Y Care International began supporting relief work following the earthquake in northern Afghanistan.
The earthquake flattened areas with limited infrastructure: the remote and rural market town of Nahrin, around 90 miles north of Kabul, and surrounding villages in Baghlan province.
More than 2,000 people died, many thousands more were left injured, and at least 20,000 people lost their homes.
We worked through our partner ACT International, which had several partner organisations working in the affected area. ACT and its member organisations distributed thousands of quilts and sent a medical team to the affected area. It worked to supply food and water, tents and medical supplies where they were most needed.
