Goma volcano emergency response

31 January 2002

On the 17th of January the eruption of Mount Nyiragongo devastated Goma, capital of the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The city's population of 350,000 initially fled into neighbouring Rwanda but soon returned. It quickly became clear that feeding centres and kitchens were urgently needed, as the people had no way of preparing food in the ruined city.

Y Care International launched an appeal for funds and, through ACT international, provided blankets, kitchen utensils, food and drinking water.
